The exhibition juxtaposes 19th century Greenland with the Greenland of today. Inuuteq Storch’s own photographs of his hometown Sisimiut (from the upcoming book Keepers of the Ocean) are presented alongside the archival project Mirrored – Portraits of Good Hope, where he has found photos by Greenland’s first photographer John “Ujuut” Møller from the period 1889-1935.
To Inuuteq Storch, the exhibition is part of a larger effort to promote Greenlandic self-expression and postcolonial consciousness about national pride and identity. The exhibition connects the works of the two photographers over a period of more than 100 years and explores the development of the geographic identity as seen from the perspective of its people.
In Greenland the landscape and weather is dominant and nature rules over life’s rhythms. But the stories being told about life in this landscape have historically been influenced by Danish travellers, whose perspective have affected the portrayal’s. In Storch’s art he is searching for his own visual narrative, as well as that of other Greenlandic people: How does the images look, when they come from within and not from the outside?
In conjunction to the exhibition there will be a symposium Gazes on Greenland, where art from and about Greenland will be discussed. It will take place on 13 November at The Greenlandic House Aarhus.
Inuuteq Storch (b. 1989) lives and works in Greenland. He is a graduate of ICP in New York and of Fatamorgana in Copenhagen.
